Welcome to the website of the Center on South Asian Studies (“CSAS,” “we,” “our,” or “us”). By accessing or using this website and any related services, publications, events, donation systems, or programs (collectively, the “Services”), you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions (“Terms”).

1. Organizational Status

CSAS is a nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. All activities, publications, and services are provided for educational, scholarly, and charitable purposes only.

Nothing on this website constitutes legal, financial, academic, or professional advice.


2. Permitted Use of the Website

You agree to use the Services only for lawful, non-commercial, and educational purposes.

You must not:

  • violate any applicable law or regulation

  • attempt unauthorized access to systems, data, or accounts

  • copy, distribute, or commercially exploit website content without permission

  • upload harmful, misleading, or infringing material

CSAS reserves the right to suspend or terminate access at its discretion.

By submitting papers, abstracts, media, or other materials to CSAS:

  • You grant CSAS a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to publish, display, archive, distribute, and promote the material for academic and nonprofit purposes.

  • You confirm the submission does not infringe third-party rights.

Provide:

4. Privacy and Data Protection

Your use of the Services is also governed by our Privacy Policy.

Third-Party Donation Processing (Funraise)

Online donations and donor management are processed through Funraise and its integrated payment partners. Donation information, payment processing, and donor records may be securely stored or managed by these trusted third-party providers, which maintain their own privacy and security practices.

CSAS does not sell personal data.

Data Use

Information is used solely for:

  • nonprofit administration and communication

  • donation processing and receipting

  • legal compliance

  • improving services and programs

Data Retention

Data is retained only as long as necessary for legal, operational, or archival nonprofit purposes.

Children’s Privacy (COPPA)

CSAS does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

International Users

Users outside the United States consent to transfer and processing of data in the U.S.


5. Donations and Refund Policy

Donations support CSAS’s charitable and educational mission.

  • Donations are generally non-refundable, except in cases of verified processing error.

  • Official donation receipts are provided for tax purposes.

  • CSAS is not responsible for bank, card network, or payment-processor fees.

Online donations are processed through Funraise and its payment partners. Processing timelines, confirmations, and certain refund procedures may be subject to Funraise’s platform policies and applicable financial regulations.

6. Events, Conferences, and Programs

Participation in CSAS programs is voluntary.

CSAS reserves the right to:

  • modify speakers, schedules, or formats

  • cancel, postpone, or relocate events

  • change virtual or in-person delivery methods

CSAS is not responsible for:

  • travel or accommodation costs

  • visa or immigration issues

  • personal injury, illness, or property loss

  • technical disruptions in virtual events

By attending events, you consent to reasonable photography, audio, or video recording for nonprofit educational and archival use.


7. Communications and SMS Consent

By providing contact information, you agree to receive organizational communications such as:

  • event announcements

  • program updates

  • donation-related messages

If you opt into SMS messaging:

  • message frequency may vary

  • standard carrier rates may apply

  • you may opt out anytime by replying STOP

CSAS complies with applicable U.S. communication laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).


8. Third-Party Links and External Services

The website may include links to third-party platforms or resources.

CSAS is not responsible for:

  • external content or accuracy

  • privacy or security practices

  • third-party transactions or services

Use of third-party services is at your own risk.


9. Disclaimer of Warranties

All Services are provided “as is” and “as available.”

CSAS makes no warranties regarding:

  • accuracy or completeness

  • reliability or availability

  • uninterrupted or error-free operation

All implied warranties are disclaimed to the fullest extent permitted by law.


10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • CSAS shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages.

  • Total liability shall not exceed the amount paid to CSAS in the preceding 12 months, if any.

Some jurisdictions may not allow certain limitations, so portions may not apply.


11. Indemnification

You agree to defend and hold harmless CSAS, its officers, staff, volunteers, and partners from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from:

  • misuse of the Services

  • violation of these Terms

  • infringement of third-party rights


12. Accessibility and Non-Discrimination

CSAS is committed to:

  • accessibility consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

  • nondiscrimination regardless of race, religion, gender, nationality, ethnicity, disability, or background

13. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, USA.

Before initiating legal proceedings, parties agree to attempt good-faith mediation.

All legal actions must be brought in courts located in Illinois.

To the extent permitted by law:

  • disputes must be brought individually

  • class actions are waived


14. Changes to These Terms

CSAS may update these Terms at any time. Updated versions will be posted with a revised Effective Date.

Continued use of the Services constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
